ArcNebula Codex : Gun Emplacement

Gun Emplacement
Gun Emplacements are typically stationed in defence grids around areas that require a heavy defence network and are in a fixed position in space. Although a single emplacement is enough to cover most entry and exit points to small stations and other medium sized installations. In these cases the guns are controlled by the object they are protecting via sub-space frequencies. The frequencies are generally restricted and kept secret to prevent hacking attempts.
Sometimes Gun Emplacements are setup in batteries and left on automatic with preprogrammed "Friend / Foe" settings. This is often when a claim is staked on an area of space that is not populated - such as a rich untapped asteroid field which has just been discovered, and is awaiting the arrival of personnel and ships to mine it. Once a target which is considered "not friendly" is detected they fire freely until the target is either destroyed or flees out of range.
Gun Emplacements have high rates of fire, multiple cannons, excellent heat dissipation, and are incredibly robust; requiring little maintenance. In short, it's not worth trying to take them out at close range with anything but the heaviest weapons. A far better approach is targeting them from a distance with missiles.
Gun Emplacements are vulnerable to hacking however, and also have a small area inside which can be used as a refuge and even a manual control cockpit by skilled gunners. Pilots who have had to eject in combat, finding themselves without a ship and close to turrets may wish to use them as a temporary base of operations until help arrives or the threat disappears.
